The Usborne Poetry Competition 2008
'Rhythm
and Rhyme' is the focus for
this year’s Children’s
Book Week (6th - 12th October).
To support
this fantastic
campaign and National Year of Reading
2008 we are running the
USBORNE CHILDREN'S POETRY
COMPETITION 2008.
Usborne Children's Poetry Competition
Pupils of primary and secondary school age in the UK can win some incredible Usborne prizes, simply by entering a poem about Amazing Animals before Thursday 18th September.
How to enter
Either
individually or as a class, children simply need to write a poem
about Amazing Animals (this can be real or imaginary animals, or
even a combination of both!).- Each entry should be on a single sheet of paper no larger than A3 size, and no longer than 50 lines.
- Consideration will be given to presentation as well as to content, so get creative - the brighter the better!
Entrants
must include their name/class, school address and age/year group.- The closing date for entries is Thursday 18th September 2008.
- Please note: The competition is open to children in the UK only.

Prizes
The
competition is divided into three categories:
- 5-7 years (KS1)
- 8-11 years (KS2)
- 12+ years (KS3/4)
The winner of each category will receive:
- A personalised signed copy of the Usborne Book of Poetry, shortlisted for the CLPE Poetry Award 2008.
- £50 worth of Usborne 'rhythm and rhyme' books (appropriate to their age group) for their school.
The overall winner will also receive an exclusive
Usborne poetry event:

On
National Poetry Day, Thursday 9th October (during
Children's Book Week), poet and editor of the Usborne Book
of Poetry Sam Taplin will entertain the
winner's class with lively readings from his extraordinary poetry
anthology. Hearing a real poet and editor talk about their work and how a poetry anthology is compiled will inspire a love of words in children of any age.
A panel of Usborne experts, including Sam Taplin and Usborne's Oxford Publishing Director Felicity Brooks will judge the competition.
Winners
will be announced on all Usborne websites in the week beginning Monday
22nd September 2008 - keep checking the sites then to see
